Recategorisation Restrictions Explained

There are a couple of restrictions to be aware of when recategorising categories. Please also note that the option to edit categories is only available to users who have permission to publish. If you are unsure as to whether you have permission to publish, check out this article.
Use the 'Parent Category' dropdown in the Edit Category window to change the parent category of categories that have been created in elevio. Using this dropdown menu, you can:
- change the parent category of subcategories
- nest Top Level categories under other Top Level categories
- transform subcategories into Top Level categories
However, a category that has existing subcategories cannot be nested under another top level category.
This is because it is not possible to have more than two levels of nested categories.
How to Make a Category Nestable
If you would like to restructure your content so that a category (that has existing subcategories) can be nested under another category, you will either need to move or remove its subcategories.
This can be achieved by the following methods:
- recategorising its subcategories to be top level categories
- moving its subcategories to be nested under other top level categories
- deleting its subcategories (and their content)
Once it has no subcategories, you will be able to nest this category under other categories.
N.B. It is not possible to change the parent category of categories that have been synced in. It is also not possible to nest subcategories created in elevio under externally created subcategories. This is because any changes that are made to synced categories will be overwritten on the next re-sync. The synced categories will need to be managed where they were externally created.
